My first app in my Favorite App series is a cloud storage app called Dropbox
I know it’s really nerdy but I am an accountant so I am a nerd. One of my most useful and favorites apps is Dropbox. As their slogan goes, “your stuff, anywhere”. It’s your digital stuff they are referring to. Think of it as another directory on your computer that you can access and there are so many other different ways you can access and use it. Here is just a brief list of how to use Dropbox, a FREE application and website.
- Keep your stuff secure and backed-up on Dropbox’s servers – I don’t save nearly any files to my computer without having it sit on Dropbox. It’s so great for pictures. You can organize them, access them anytime and rest assured that they won’t disappear if your computer dies or runs away. Any file that you could save to your computer, you can save to Dropbox. Pictures, videos, applications, Microsoft Office, data files from other applications….anything!
- Share files with others. It’s easy to setup shared directories and share with others by sending them a link to a specific directory in your Dropbox. They will only have access to the directory you send them. Share files for business or pleasure, send pictures via Dropbox to the grandparents. No huge attachments in email to deal with. Just a link.
- Access your files on your phone or tablet. This is great because you can virtually have any information you want with you anywhere. If it’s in your Dropbox, it can be with you. I scan everything and save it to my Dropbox. Insurance cards, ID’s, credit cards, SS cards, birth certificates. It’s all secure with your Dropbox pin and any file can have a separate long password of your choose. Of course you need to have a connection to the internet via Wi-Fi or cellular but that’s not too difficult this day. You can always log into your Dropbox account from any computer hooked up to the internet.
- Email files to your Dropbox if you are on a system that won’t let you access Dropbox (think work or at some third-party business) but you want to save a to your Dropbox. You can go to SendtoDropbox.com to check out this feature. You can also just email it to yourself and save the file later when you have access to your Dropbox.
- Sync you iTunes library between multiple locations. Just move your iTunes library to your Dropbox and point iTunes at the directory. Then you can access it from anywhere you’ve installed iTunes and Dropbox. I do this for all my home computers and my work laptop.
- Dropbox is integrated with many other apps as well as email so you can save files directly it.
- Sync your photos and videos from your phone to your Dropbox with 1 click using the Camera Sync app.
I hope you enjoy Dropbox as I and millions of other people do.
If you liked this article and want to try out this app, please use my link. It’s still free for you but it gives me a little extra space in my ever-growing Dropbox account. When you share this great tool with your friends, you can expand your storage space for free too.
